Dramaturgy
I work as a dramaturg with artists and companies to develop new work, in the room, on the page, and the thinking that happens in between.
My practice spans both script and production dramaturgy, with a particular focus on devising companies. I love working at the point where story and process are still being discovered together, helping companies not just build a piece of work, but develop the methodologies that will keep sustaining their practice. I also work one-to-one with writers on new scripts, adaptations, and projects drawn from source material or lived experience, at any stage of development, from early fragments to late drafts.
Dramaturgical work undertaken in various capacities with the Royal Court, Zoo Co, Told by an Idiot, The Egg, Cut the Cord, Katla Theatre, Blaagaard Teater and Teaterhuset Filuren, alongside individual writers and artists.
I hold an MA in Dramaturgy from Birkbeck University (2025, Distinction), where I received the Michael Ross Prize for Best Dramaturgical Protocol Practice. My research explored how theatres can engage meaningfully with accessibility, through representation, devising practice, and the conditions in which work is made.
If you’re interested in working together, or simply want to talk through what your project might need, I’d love to hear from you.
‘Maria’s work is genuinely pioneering – she brings imaginative and critically engaged perspectives to dramaturgical practice that question conventional structures of and approaches to theatre making. Maria’s unwavering commitment to her creative vision and deep intellectual curiosity mark her as a truly promising dramaturg. I have no doubt she will make meaningful contributions to contemporary theatre, and I look forward to seeing how Maria’s journey unfolds in the field’
Dr. Seda Ilter, Programme Director, MA Dramaturgy, Birkbeck University
‘I've had the privilege to work on multiple theatre productions with Maria across co-creation, dramaturgy and as a writer, including our work on multi-award winning 'Perfect Show For Rachel' (Barbican, Brighton Festival, ILT Festival Denmark).
Maria is invaluable in a room, (and in the vital spaces in between) bringing wisdom, sensitivity, rigour and a deep creative fuel she can access (seemingly always) that is transformative. Her skill is equal to her care and the politic she holds, facilitating radically inclusive, equitable and generous processes that are urgently needed in the current cultural / political landscape.
She possesses the unique capacity to create and translate work that transcends national, cultural and social boundaries and barriers with a sharp eye and critical nuance, nurturing productions so that artists and audiences can be truly alive and connected.
There's not a creative room that isn't better for having Maria in it.’
